Here is the second half of 22 mares I'm previewing for the Fasig-Tipton November Sale on Monday.
Hip #117 - "Open Water," Include - Biscayne Bay (A.P. Indy)
Dark bay or brown filly (2009) consigned by Bluewater Sales LLC, Agent XXXI
Coming right out of Breeders' Cup weekend, this seems like an appropriate entry to start the second half of this sale preview with. Her second dam is Flanders, the gritty winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) over Serena's Song in 1994. Flanders went on to have a pretty successful broodmare career; the best of her foals was Surfside, a champion just like her dam. Other foals out of Flanders were Battle Plan, a Grade 2 winner, and Flanders Fields, who is a full sister to the dam of this filly. Biscayne Bay only made one start on the racetrack and finished unplaced. She has, however, produced four winners out of five to race, including Open Water, who is a Grade 1 winner on the track. She is selling as either a racing or a broodmare prospect.
Hip #119 - "Palace Rumor," Royal Anthem - Whisperifyoudare (Red Ransom)
Bay mare (2003) consigned by Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, Agent
On the track, Palace Rumor was a stakes winner who earned over $100,000. She is a half-sister to Maya's Storm (Stormy Atlantic) and Jumpifyoudare (Jump Start), both of which are multiple listed stakes winner. Second dam Stellar Affair also produced Sweet Trip, dam of track-record setter Rail Trip. Palace Rumor has produced three winners out of three to race, the best of which is Palace Malice (Curlin), winner of the Belmont (G1) and Jim Dandy (G1) this year. She is in foal to Horse of the Year Mineshaft, who has produced horses like Grade 1 winners It's Tricky, Dialed In and Discreetly Mine.
Hip #134 - "Rhumb Line," Mr. Greeley - Rose Rhapsody (Pleasant Colony)
Chestnut mare (2000) consigned by Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, Agent
This mare, who was a winner on the track, is from a family that has produced several stakes winners, but her real worth lies in what she has produced herself. She boasts four winners out of five to race. Three are stakes winners - Grade 1 winner Zazu (Tapit), Grade 2 winner Flashback (also Tapit) and listed stakes winner Corinthian's Jewel (Tap...just kidding, Corinthian!). Her yearling and foal of this year are also by Tapit, and, since the nick has been proven to work well, why not give it another go? Rhumb Line enters this sale in foal to Tapit, who is known for precocious runners like two year-old champions Hansen and Stardom Bound.
Hip #142 - "Shamarbelle," Montjeu - Helsinki (GB) (Machiavellian)
Bay filly (2009) consigned by Bedouin Bloodstock, Agent
Shamarbelle has a heck of a pedigree on her. She is by champion Montjeu, who also is the sire of world-renowned runners like Hurricane Run and St. Nicholas Abbey. Her dam, a full sister to international top sire Street Cry, was a winner on the track, and produced seven winners herself. Her son Shamardal (Giant's Causeway) was a European champion and four-time Grade 1 winner who also is a very good sire. Second dam Helen Street was a winner of the Irish Oaks (G1) who produced ten winners out of eleven foals to race. She is in foal to Speightstown, who adds American speed to her European stamina-laden blood.
Hip #154 - "Speed Succeeds," Gone West - Daijin (Deputy Minister)
Dark bay or brown mare (2001) consigned by Gainesway, Agent IV
Although unraced, Speed Succeeds has produced two stakes winners. One is Brilliant Speed (Dynaformer), a Blue Grass Stakes (G1) winner who later would dance all the big dances in the turf route division, including a third-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Turf (G1). The other is Souper Speedy (Indian Charlie), winner of the listed Jaipur Stakes at Belmont. Speed Succeeds is also from a very nice family. Dam Daijin is a full sister to Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Touch Gold and a half-sister to Canadian Triple Crown champion With Approval. She produced five foals to race, all five of them winners, including Canadian champion mare Serenading (A.P. Indy). Speed Succeeds is currently pregnant to champion sire Street Cry, best known for the popular mare Zenyatta and for Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Street Sense.
Hip #192 - "Afleeting Lady," Afleet Alex - Oatsee (Unbridled)
Bay mare (2007) consigned by Mill Ridge Sales, Agent
It never hurts when both of your parents are champions. Well, Afleet Alex captured hearts on the track, but Oatsee did her best work in the breeding shed, eventually earning the revered title of broodmare of the year. This mare is a half-sibling to Preakness (G1) victor Shackleford (Forestry), Alabama (G1) winner Lady Joanne (Orientate), graded stakes winner Baghdaria (Royal Academy) and listed stakes winner Stephanoatsee (A.P. Indy). Afleeting Lady wasn't so bad herself on the track, winning a Grade 2 race and nearly half a million dollars in earnings. She is in foal to Medaglia d'Oro, a popular choice for stakes-winning mares.
Hip #195 - "Mi Sueno," Pulpit - Madcap Escapade (Hennessy)
Bay mare (2007) consigned by Bluewater Sales LLC, Agent XXXI
Grade 1 winner Mi Sueno comes from good stock. Madcap Escapade was a Grade 1 winner, as was her half-sister, Dubai Escapade. Second dam Sassy Pants was a stakes winner and a half-sister to a few more stakes winners. Since her retirement, Mi Sueno has produced two foals, with neither of them ready to race just quite yet. Her stock goes up quite a bit more when you see that she is pregnant to Frankel, Europe's sweetheart, who conquered every rival that dared to face him and set the standard for turf champions to come.
Hip #207 - "Awesome Feather," Awesome of Course - Precious Feather (Gone West)
Bay mare (2008) consigned by Adena Springs
Awesome Feather was one of the more exciting racing fillies to come around in recent years. She rode a ten race winning streak going into last year's Breeders' Cup Distaff (then called the Ladies' Classic), including a win in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) two years previous. Out of those ten races, nine of them were stakes races. Her streak was snapped by Royal Delta's second consecutive win in the event, and Awesome Feather retired with just that one blemish on her otherwise spotless record. Her dam was also a multiple stakes winner, and second dam Last Feather was a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Caucasus. Awesome Feather is believed to be in foal to Medaglia d'Oro.
Hip #213 - "Danceinthesunlight," A.P. Indy - Dancethruthedawn (Mr. Prospector)
Dark bay or brown mare (2005) consigned by Bluewater Sales Agency, Agent XXXI
The second foal out of this mare was Moreno (Ghostzapper), a Grade 1 placed stakes winner who most recently was on the hot pace in the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1). Danceinthesunlight, though unraced, is from a family full of champions. Her dam, Dancethruthedawn, was a brilliant champion filly in Canada who won the Go For Wand Handicap (G1) at Saratoga as well. Second dam Dance Smartly was even more of a legend in her home country, winning Canada's Triple Crown and their Horse of the Year title, plus the Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) for good measure. She is a half-sister to leading sire Smart Strike, among other graded stakes winners. Danceinthesunlight is currently carrying a full sibling to her graded stakes-winning son Moreno.
Hip #215 - "Champagne d'Oro," Medaglia d'Oro - Champagne Glow (Saratoga Six)
Bay mare (2007) consigned by Bluewater Sales LLC, Agent XXXI
This mare wasn't too shabby on the racetrack herself, but let's take a look at her immediate family first. She is out of a Grade 1 placed stakes winner and a half-sister to Ruler on Ice (Roman Ruler), 2011's longshot Belmont Stakes (G1) winner. Second dam Champagne Ginny produced quite a few stakes winners, including Italian champion Jurado and Hollywood Futurity (G1) winner Grand Canyon. On the track, Champagne d'Oro won three races, including two Grade 1 events, and earned over $600,000. Her first foal was a filly by Bernardini; she is now pregnant to leading sire Tapit.
Hip #220 - "Betterbetterbetter (IRE)," Galileo - Jude (Darshaan)
Bay filly (2009) consigned by Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, Agent
Betterbetterbetter's stakes-winning siblings have all been by Sadler's Wells, the sire of Galileo, who is one of the leading international stallions at stud today. Her half-sister Yesterday (IRE) (Sadler's Wells) was an English classic winner who also finished third in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1). Another half-sibling, Quarter Moon (IRE) (Sadler's Wells), was also a Grade 1 winner. All in all, dam Jude was a very nice broodmare, producing seven winners out of eight to race. Betterbetterbetter herself was a graded stakes-placed winner and enters this sale in foal to War Front, who is one of the hottest sires on the market today. And to end on a light note, take a look at her catalog page...full of Beatles lyrics! It's nice to see breeders with great taste in music as well as horses.
