Pedigree Highlights - Fasig-Tipton November (Part One)

Here is the first half of 22 mares I'm previewing for the Fasig-Tipton November Sale on Monday.

Hip #4 - "Baroness Amira," Street Cry (IRE) - Star of Goshen (Lord At War (ARG))
Dark bay or brown filly (2010) consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, Agent XIV
Although this mare didn't race all that much - a second from two starts - her immediate family is not lacking in Grade 1 experience.  She is a half-sister to Pioneerofthenile (Empire Maker), a two-time Grade 1 winner who was second in the 2009 Kentucky Derby (G1) and who is a budding sire.  Another half-sibling, Forefathers (Gone West), was graded-placed as a racehorse.  Dam Star of Goshen herself was a stakes winner and a half to Malibu (G2) winner Powis Castle.  This is also the family of Grade 1 winner Bordonaro and multiple stakes winner Seahawk Gold.  Baroness Amira also is in foal to Bodemeister, the brilliant runner-up in both the 2012 Derby and Preakness to I'll Have Another.

Hip #15 - "Better Not Cry," Street Cry (IRE) - Better Than Honour (Deputy Minister)
Bay filly (2010) consigned by Bluewater Sales LLC, Agent XXXI
Here's another Street Cry filly out of an even better family than the first.  She is from one of the most sought-after families in racing today.  Her dam, Better Than Honour, was a Grade 2 winner, but became a name of national importance when her son Jazil (Seeking the Gold) won the Belmont Stakes in 2006.  A year later, her daughter Rags to Riches (A.P. Indy) also won the Belmont Stakes and in 2009, Man of Iron (Giant's Causeway) took the Breeders' Cup Marathon for his own.  Grade 2 winner Casino Drive (Mineshaft) is also a half-sibling to this filly.  Second dam Blush With Pride was a Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner who is also the granddam of Grade 1 winners Peeping Fawn and Thewayyouare.  Better Not Cry, who only raced once, is not in foal to any particular stallion but is being offered as solely a broodmare prospect.

Hip #23 - "Conchita," Cozzene - Desert Gold (Seeking the Gold)
Gray or roan mare (2005) consigned by Dromoland Farm, Inc. (Gerry Dilger), Agent I
This mare is also out of a nice female family; she is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner White Moonstone (Dynaformer) and graded-placed Albasharah (Arch).  Dam Desert Gold was a stakes winner, carrying on the traditions of her very nice family, headed by granddam Breezy Stories.  Second dam Desert Stormette is a full sister to Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) winner Desert Stormer, who ended up being the granddam of recent Grade 1 winner Better Lucky.  Desert Stormette produced Kalahari Cat, who in turn is the dam of Black Onyx, a Grade 3 winner who had to scratch out of this year's Kentucky Derby.  Conchita herself was a winner on the track and has since produced two foals to race - both of them have won, including stakes-placed Music Chart (Exchange Rate).  She is in foal to sprint champion Speightstown.

Hip #45 - "Funny Feeling," Distorted Humor - Hookedonthefeelin (Citidancer)
Chestnut mare (2007) consigned by Mill Ridge Sales, Agent
There's California in this mare's blood, even though she was a stakes winner at Monmouth.  She is a full sister to super-fast Jimmy Creed, a Malibu (G1) winner, and a half-sister to Pussycat Doll (Real Quiet), a two-time Grade 1 winner at Santa Anita who also captured the Humana Distaff (G1) at Churchill Downs as well.  Hookedonthefeelin herself was a Grade 1 winner and a full sister to Citiview, who is the dam of Acorn (G1) winner Midnight Lucky and stakes-placed Songofthecity.  Funny Feeling is in foal to the ever-popular Medaglia d'Oro, whose progeny includes the likes of champion Rachel Alexandra and Grade 1 winners Plum Pretty and Marketing Mix.

Hip #51 - "Goldena Podkove," War Pass - Get Lucky (Mr. Prospector)
Dark bay or brown filly (2010) consigned by Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, Agent
This filly is a daughter of the short-lived champion sire War Pass, sire of Grade 1 winners Java's War and Revolutionary.  Her dam, Get Lucky, was a Grade 3 winner on the track who became one of the most influential mares in the breeding shed.  She produced 9 winners from 9 to race, including four stakes winners: Girolamo, Daydreaming, and Accelerator (all by A.P. Indy) and Harborage (Monarchos).  The foals who didn't go on to win stakes did quite well as producers.  Supercharger (A.P. Indy) produced Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Super Saver and She's A Winner (again, A.P. Indy) is the dam of sire Bluegrass Cat.  Goldena Podkove was never raced but is in foal to champion racehorse and sire Bernardini, bringing in that nice A.P. Indy blood that worked so well with her dam.

Hip #61 - "Here Comes Amelia," War Chant - Amelia Bearhart (Bold Hour)
Dark bay or brown mare (2006) consigned by Maynard Farm
Although she wasn't a world-beater on the track by any means, this mare is also a half-sister to a handful of nice horses.  Her half-brother, Chief Bearhart (Chief's Crown) was an outstanding turf racer, winning champion grass horse four times and a Canadian Horse of the Year title as well.  He won both the Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) and the Canadian International (G1) and earned more than $3.2 million.  Another half-brother, Explosive Red (Explodent), won the Hollywood Derby (G1), and Sundown Serenade (Deputy Minister) is the granddam of Panamanian champion Private Zone.  Here Comes Amelia is in foal to Malibu Moon, sire of this year's Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Orb.

Hip #73 - "In Lingerie," Empire Maker - Cat Chat (Storm Cat)
Bay filly (2009) consigned by Bluewater Sales LLC, Agent X
Now here's a girl with some nice stakes experience under her belt.  She won four out of her eight starts, including the Spinster Stakes (G1) and earned nearly three-quarters of a million dollars on the track.  Her pedigree isn't too shabby either - she's out of Cat Chat, who was a Grade 2 winner on the track, and second dam Phone Chatter was a champion, winning the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1).  Cat Chat is also a half-sister to the dam of Norfolk (G1) winner Dixie Chatter.  This is also the family of Grade 1 winners Afifa and Any Given Saturday.  To make things even better, In Lingerie comes into this sale in foal to Frankel, a popular son of Galileo who was arguably one of the best racehorses we've seen in a while.

Hip #90 - "Love and Pride," A.P. Indy - Ile de France (Storm Cat)
Dark bay or brown mare (2008) consigned by Three Chimneys Sales, Agent
Love and Pride took a while to get going on the track but, at age four, won two Grade 1 races, each of them on different sides of the country.  She is the only stakes-winning foal out of Grade 1 placed Ile de France, a daughter of Cara Rafaela, who finished second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) in 1995.  Cara Rafaela is even better known as the dam of Bernardini, 2006's champion three year-old colt who has blossomed into a nice sire as well.  Another half-sister to Ile de France, Lovely Regina, produced Thiskyhasnolimit, a two-time Grade 3 winner.  Love and Pride is in foal to Distorted Humor, sire of Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Funny Cide and Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) winner Drosselmeyer.

Hip #95 - "Malvinia," A.P. Indy - Macoumba (Mr. Prospector)
Dark bay or brown mare (2006) consigned by Allied Bloodstock, Agent
Right from the start, you see this mare has a nice pedigree, being by leading sire A.P. Indy and out of a Grade 1 winning Mr. Prospector mare.  Look a little closer and you'll discover that she is in fact a full sister to leading sire Malibu Moon.  Although Malibu Moon never won a stakes on the track, fracturing a knee early in his two year-old campaign, his foals have done the work for him, winning some of the nation's biggest races.  Second dam Maximova (FR) was also a Grade 1 winner and the matriarch of a very nice European family, boasting horses like Grade 1 winners Septieme Ciel and Riviera (FR).  Malvinia is believed to be pregnant to Medaglia d'Oro, another one of America's leading sires.

Hip #104 - "Mizdirection," Mizzen Mast - Deceptive (Clever Trick)
Gray or roan mare (2008) consigned by Three Chimneys Sales, Agent
This mare should be among the most popular in the sale, if not the sale topper.  She's coming here fresh off a repeat win in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1), beating the boys - and Reneesgotzip - for a second time.  Her resume includes a perfect record on Santa Anita's downhill turf course, and she's only finished off the board twice in 17 lifetime starts.  Mizdirection is by far the most successful horse in her immediate family, but if you look back a little further, you'll find graded stakes winners like Hooh Why, Jaded Dancer and Sultry Sun.  Although Mizdirection is listed as both a racing and a broodmare prospect, it is more likely that her new owner will send her off to the breeding farm (although you never know).

Hip #109 - "Music Room," Unbridled's Song - Note Musicale (GB) (Sadler's Wells)
Chestnut mare (2003) consigned by Select Sales, Agent
Music Room is a half-sister to a very nice filly in Music Note (A.P. Indy), who won a whopping five Grade 1 events and finished third in the Breeders' Cup Distaff twice.  Their other stakes-winning half-sister is Musical Chimes (In Excess (IRE)) who was a French classic winner on the racetrack.  Second dam It's In The Air was a champion, winner of the Vanity (G1) and dam of nine winners, including Grade 2 winner Bitooh (GB) and stakes-placed Sous Entendu, granddam of Grade 1 winner Alverita.  Like her dam, Music Room never raced, but has had some success as a broodmare, producing a stakes-placed winner in Zinzay (Smart Strike).  She is currently in foal to champion Bernardini.
