Pedigree Highlights - Keeneland September Yearling Sale Book One (Day Three)

We move on to the preview of twenty horses in Keeneland's Wednesday session:

Hip #445 - Smart Strike - Silk And Scarlet (GB) (Sadler's Wells)
Chestnut colt consigned by Michael C. Byrne, Agent
The first yearling to preview for session three is this son of Smart Strike, a sire who is known world-wide for the quality of his sons and daughters.  This colt's dam has produced two winners out of three to race, and those three couldn't be any better.  Eishin Apollon (Giant's Causeway) is a Grade 1 winner in Japan, and Master of Hounds is a Grade 1 winner in the UAE.  Silk And Scarlet herself was a Grade 2 winner in Ireland, and her brother Danger Over is also a graded winner, but in France.  Second dam Danilova is a half-sister to French Derby (G1) winner Sanglamore.  Smart Strike adds American spice to this pedigree already laden with international success.  A very intriguing way to start the session, to be sure.

Hip #446 - Tiznow - Silken Cat (Storm Cat)
Bay filly consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, Agent for Aaron & Marie Jones
Directly following that last yearling is this filly by Tiznow.  Yearlings by Tiznow sold exceptionally well in today's portion of the sale, so there should be high hopes for this filly, who also happens to be a half-sister to the speedy racehorse and sire Speightstown.  Speightstown captured the Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) en route to an award for champion sprinter.  Dam Silken Cat was a nice racehorse herself, earning a two year-old championship in Canada.  Second dam Silken Doll is a half to Grade 1 winner Turk Passer, and this female family has produced graded stakes winners like Mani Bhavan, Star Dabbler, Hear the Ghost and Pink Champagne.

Hip #451 - Tale of the Cat - Siren Serenade (Unbridled's Song)
Bay filly consigned by Hunter Valley Farm, Agent
Tale of the Cat is undoubtedly a sire of racehorses.  His best is probably Gio Ponti, who was a top racehorse for many years before retirement.  Tale of the Cat foals certainly know how to keep running and keep winning.  This filly is only the second foal out of a mare from an outstanding female family.  She is very closely related to Saarland (his sire, Unbridled, is, of course, the sire of Unbridled's Song), a good racehorse and decent sire as well.  Another half-sibling to this mare is George Vancouver, winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1).  Second dam Versailles Treaty was an exceptional racehorse, winning four Grade 1 races and finishing second in the Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1).  Third dam Ten Cents a Dance is a half-sister to General Assembly, who, after 34 years, still holds the track record at Saratoga for ten furlongs, a feat he achieved in the 1979 Travers (G1).

Hip #457 - Candy Ride (ARG) - Sky Beam (Kingmambo)
Bay colt consigned by Woods Edge Farm (Peter O'Callaghan), Agent
Candy Ride, a South American invader, always manages to sire stunning individuals, so, if all is well, this colt should be quite the picture in the ring.  He is a half-brother to Sky Kingdom (Empire Maker), a stakes winner who finished third in this year's Hollywood Gold Cup (G1).  Sky Beam is a full sister to Mambo in Seattle, who finished second to Colonel John in the Travers (G1).  Third dam Weekend Surprise is a half-sister to European highweight Wolfhound and the mother of two very great racehorses and sires, A.P. Indy and Summer Squall.  From the two that have raced so far, both of Sky Beam's progeny are winners.

Hip #460 - Giant's Causeway - Slide (Smarten)
Chestnut colt consigned by Pramount Sales, Agent L
This colt is a full brother to Grade 2 winner Santiva, who also finished second in the Dixiana Breeders' Futurity (G2).  His dam has done quite well in the breeding shed, producing eight winners out of eleven to race, including graded-placed winners Her Majesty, another full sibling to this yearling, and Take Arms (Honour and Glory).  She is also a half-sister to sprint champion Safely Kept, who won the Test Stakes (G1) before beating the boys in the Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1).  Another half-sibling to Slide, Partner's Hero, was a Grade 1 winner who equaled the track record for six furlongs at Turfway Park.

Hip #466 - "Think Snow," Giant's Causeway - Snow Forest (Woodman)
Chestnut filly consigned by Lane's End, Agent for Mt. Brilliant Farm
Here's another Giant's Causeway yearling, a filly who is bred along the same lines as her half-brother, Snow Ridge (his sire, Tabasco Cat, is by Storm Cat, as Giant's Causeway is).  Snow Ridge was also a nice racehorse, winning just over $700,000, his biggest victory coming in the San Carlos Handicap (G1).  This filly is also a half-sibling to Pavarotti (A.P. Indy), a listed stakes winner.  Second dam Ice Fantasy became the matriarch of quite a nice female family.  Her daughters produced horses that would eventually give us Afleet Express, a Travers (G1) winner, and Grade 2 winners Sweetnorthernsaint, Eye of the Tiger and Fiftyshadesofhay.

Hip #485 - Stormy Atlantic - Speed Succeeds (Gone West)
Dark bay or brown colt consigned by Gainesway, Agent XXX
This Stormy Atlantic colt is from one of my favorite families in the stud book.  For starters, he is a half-brother to Bluegrass Stakes (G1) winner Brilliant Speed (Dynaformer), who also boasts on-the-board performances in the Belmont Stakes (G1) and Breeders' Cup Classic (G1).  Another brother to this colt, Souper Speedy (Indian Charlie), is a graded-placed stakes winner.  Second dam Daijin is a full sister to Belmont winner Touch Gold and a half-sister to Canadian Triple Crown winner With Approval.  A couple of her foals include Serenading, a champion in Canada, and Handpainted, a stakes winner and producer.  Stormy Atlantic is a nice sire in his own right, getting racehorses like Get Stormy and Stormello.

Hip #496 - Galileo - Starlight Dreams (Black Tie Affair (IRE))
Dark bay or brown colt consigned by Woods Edge Farm (Peter O'Callaghan), Agent IX
I was not the only one concerned by the low prices on the yearlings with European pedigrees earlier today.  Hopefully, after the newness of the sale wears off, these horses will go for better prices.  This yearling is certainly a standout in this session.  It's always intriguing when I see a Galileo in an American sale, as he is undoubtedly one of the best in the world, getting horses like Frankel, New Approach and Cape Blanco.  Here's a Galileo half-brother to champion Mastercraftsman (Danehill Dnacer), who is budding into a nice sire across the pond.  Mastercraftsman's full sister, Famous, is Grade 1 placed, and their half-sister Genuine Devotion (Rock of Gibraltar (IRE)) is a Grade 3 winner.  This colt is certainly bred to hang with the best.

Hip #499 - Harlan's Holiday - Steelin' (Orientate)
Bay filly property of Stonehaven Sendings
Harlan's Holiday is a very nice sire.  He even has two champions under his belt, one of which is Shanghai Bobby, who also happens to be a full brother to this yearling filly.  "Bobby" captured the Hopeful (G2), the Champagne (G1) and finally the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) last year, earning himself the title of champion two year-old colt.  Injury kept him from competing in the three year-old classics, but he is coming back slowly under the guidance of trainer Todd Pletcher.  Second dam Steel Band is a full sister to Grade 1 winner City Band and a half-sister to the dam of American Lion, who won the Illinois Derby (G3) a few years ago.  A full sister to the talented Shanghai Bobby should be pretty popular in the ring on Wednesday.

Hip #512 - Elusive Quality - Styler (Holy Bull)
Bay filly consigned by Mill Ridge Sales, Agent
Elusive Quality was known to be talented, as evidenced by his world-record performance in the 1998 Poker Stakes, but it was Smarty Jones, a member of his second crop, that really gave the young sire the boost he needed.  Since then, Elusive Quality has been producing champions like clockwork.  This daughter of his is out of Styler, a winning full sister to Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Giacomo.  Though Giacomo won the Derby at sky-high odds of 50-1, he was no fluke, finishing a credible third in the Preakness (G1) and later winning the San Diego (G2).  His half brother, Tiago, was even better, winning two Grade 1 races and even setting a track record in the process.  Tiago also managed third place finishes in the Belmont (G1) and Breeders' Cup Classic (G1).  Styler has produced four foals; two of them have gone on to race, and both of them are winners.

Hip #523 - Medaglia d'Oro - Supercharger (A.P. Indy)
Bay colt consigned by Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, Agent
Colts by Medaglia d'Oro have been selling incredibly well this year; he stamps them well.  (Although can we please agree on a pronunciation for the poor sire's name?  Let's stop butchering it - it's "meh-DAH-lya dOro," and bonus points if you can add an Italian accent to that as well.  Okay, stepping off my soapbox...)  This particular Medaglia d'Oro colt is a half-brother to Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Super Saver (Maria's Mon), who splashed home in 2010 to win Todd Pletcher his very first garland of roses.  Second dam Get Lucky is a half-sister to champion two year-old colt Rhythm, and produced some nice horses of her own, including Grade 1 winner Girolamo and Grade 2 winner Daydreaming.  Also the family of Haskell (G1) winner Bluegrass Cat, members of this family usually do very well at the sales.

Hip #533 - Kitten's Joy - Sweet Kassidy (Saint Ballado)
Bay colt consigned by Ramsey Farm, Agent
You want to have good luck on the racetrack?  Buy a Kitten's Joy and run it on the grass.  In all seriousness, though, the Kitten's Joy offspring are on fire, especially this year.  We have Big Blue Kitten and Real Solution, two of the leaders in the turf male division, and Stephanie's Kitten, a top-notch turf female.  This nick is already proven, as this mare has produced two stakes winners with the sire, including Sweet Kitten, a champion in Puerto Rico.  Second dam Dear Sweet is a full-sister to Grade 3 winner Ski Dancer, and their half sister, Southern Tradition, is also a graded stakes winner.  Ramsey is selling this colt, possibly in hopes to reduce the massive number of Kittens they own, and I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of turf-oriented buyers jump all over this prospect.

Hip #541 - Indian Charlie - Take Charge Lady (Dehere)
Bay filly consigned by Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, Agent
There is a lot to love about this filly's catalog page.  For one, she is by the late Indian Charlie, a proven sire of very nice horses.  For another, there is a huge update to this yearling's immediate family, as her half-brother Will Take Charge (Unbridled's Song) just won the Travers Stakes (G1) last month.  Her other stakes-winning brother, Take Charge Indy (A.P. Indy), was also a Grade 1 winner who looked to be on a rapid improve this year before his unfortunate injury and subsequent retirement.  Take Charge Lady, a multiple Grade 1 winner herself, could find herself broodmare of the year at the end of 2013, depending on how Will Take Charge does for the rest of the season.  Based on the successes of her brothers, this young lady could be a future graded stakes winner as well.

Hip #544 - Malibu Moon - Tap Your Heels (Unbridled)
Chestnut colt consigned by Dromoland Farm Inc. (Gerry Dilger), Agent IV
Malibu Moon is having the year of his life.  First a Derby winner, and he also happened to have one of the sale topper's in today's first session.  This colt could not be any more well-bred.  He is a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Tapit, who has become one heck of a sire as well.  His dam is a half-sibling to Rubiano, a very fast horse who also became a nice sire.  Second dam Ruby Slippers is a half-sister to Glitterman, who - you guessed it - went on to become a sire.  This is a sire's family, and to top it all off, it also boasts Grade 2 winner Dubleo as well as Belmont (G1) and Travers (G1) winner Summer Bird.  A half-brother to Tapit!  I can't wait to see him in the ring.

Hip #550 - Tapit - Teeming (Storm Cat)
Gray or roan filly consigned by Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, Agent
Speaking of Tapit, here's a daughter of his from another really good female family.  Tapit has given us young champions like Hansen and Stardom Bound, and he's showing no signs of stopping as he begins to fill the void left by the death of his brilliant sire, Pulpit.  This is a half-sister to stakes winner Cascading (A.P. Indy) and stakes-placed Distracting (Distorted Humor).  Second dam is Better Than Honour, a broodmare of the year responsible for Belmont Stakes (G1) winners Jazil and Rags to Riches, as well as a Breeders' Cup Marathon winner in Man of Iron.  Third dam Blush With Pride was a Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner.  This is a very popular family with auction buyers; I'm expecting someone to shell out a pretty penny for this filly, depending on how she looks.

Hip #568 - Malibu Moon - Tizso (Cee's Tizzy)
Bay colt consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, Agent XXXII
This is one of my personal favorite entries in the entire first book.  By Malibu Moon, this is a half-brother to the comeback kid Paynter.  Paynter, who won the Haskell (G1) last year, struggled through some life-threatening illnesses in the midst of 2012 and came out none the worse for wear, winning his debut and finishing a credible second in his first stakes attempt since the illness.  Dam Tizso has produced three stakes winners out of six winners total and is a full sister to Horse of the Year and leading sire Tiznow, as well as several other stakes winners.  This is also the family of this year's Preakness (G1) winner, Oxbow.  The Zayat family was here buying today; will they attempt to purchase this half-brother to their beloved Paynter?

Hip #581 - Indian Charlie - Turbo Dream (Unbridled)
Dark bay or brown filly consigned by Dromoland Farm (Gerry Dilger), Agent I
Indian Charlie's offspring are known for going fast and subsequently being able to carry that speed over some distance.  He has sired a Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner in Uncle Mo and a Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner in Indian Blessing.  This is what makes this filly so intriguing; she is a half-sister to Dream Rush (Wild Rush), a two-time Grade 1 winner who went on to produce the super fast Dreaming of Julia, whose performance in this year's Gulfstream Oaks (G2) is among 2013's best.  There's a lack of serious racehorse talent in the rest of this family, but with a pedigree like this, this filly's value as both a racing and future broodmare prospect are looking pretty good with the Dreaming of Julia connection.

Hip #593 - Giant's Causeway - Vallee des Reves (Kingmambo)
Bay colt (IRE) consigned by Eaton Sales, Agent
Here's a colt bred across the pond who is a full sibling to Grade 1 winner Maids Causeway (IRE).  This is another one of those Euro-bred horses who look as if they should sell well (although depending on buyer demand, they may not).  Vallee des Reves also produced Grade 3-placed Uimhir A Haon (Montjeu) and Coachella (Danehill), the dam of a graded-placed winner by Giant's Causeway.  Second dam Venise is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Vin de France and produced two highweighted stakes winners in Europe, Vetheuil and Verveine.  This colt's pedigree has a lot of international substance to it.

Hip #619 - Distorted Humor - Wile Cat (Storm Cat)
Dark bay or brown filly consigned by Eaton Sales, Agent
Since his son Funny Cide's victory in the Kentucky Derby (G1), Distorted Humor's career has become more and more successful with the years, earning him respect on a national as well as international scale.  This filly is a full sister to graded stakes winner Shumoos, who is her dam's only foal to race so far.  Shumoos was also a decent second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Sprint.  Her dam is also a full sister to Cat Fighter, winner of the La Canada (G2).  Second dam Strategic Maneuver was a very nice racehorse, winning two Grade 1 races and earning nearly half a million dollars.  A full sister to a graded stakes winner from the family of Strategic Maneuver?  Yes, please.

Hip #623 - Giant's Causeway - Win Crafty Lady (Mr. Prospector)
Chestnut colt consigned by Woodford Thoroughbreds, Agent
The last yearling to preview in this session is this Giant's Causeway colt.  (I feel like I've previewed a lot of Giant's Causeways for Wednesday - there's just too many good ones to choose from!)  This colt is a sibling to a good handful of stakes winners; he is a full brother to Win McCool, a Grade 3 winner.  His half-sister, Harmony Lodge (Hennessy), is a Grade 1 winner, and another half-sibling, Graeme Hall (Dehere), captured the Arkansas Derby (G2).  Yet another sibling is Win's Fair Lady (also by Dehere), who produced graded stakes winner First Passage.  Dam Win Crafty Lady is incredibly consistent; out of ten foals to race, nine of them are winners.

The last part of this series will come sometime tomorrow!  Enjoy the Tuesday session of the sale and watch for these horses on Wednesday!

(And remember..."meh-DAH-lya dOro!")
