Pedigree Highlights - Keeneland September Yearling Sale Book One (Part Four)

Finally, we have arrived at the last day of Keeneland's select book.  Let's take a look at the best the day has to offer - at least pedigree-wise:

Hip #666 - "A.P. Candy," Candy Ride (ARG) - A.P. Dream (A.P. Indy)
Dark bay or brown filly consigned by Lane's End, Agent for Kinsman Farm
A champion in Argentina, Candy Ride came to the States to do good work, including his impressive track-record performance in the Pacific Classic (G1).  Since then, he has become a decent sire, getting fleet-footed racehorses like Misremembered and Sidney's Candy.  This filly is out of a winning full sister to Grade 1 winner Majestic Warrior, the sire of one of the best horses in the country, Princess of Sylmar.  Also a full sibling to this filly's dam is Crystal Current, a stakes-placed producing mare.  Second dam Dream Supreme herself was a brilliant racehorse, winning both the Ballerina (G1) and Test (G1).  She is also a half-sister to Sweet City Gal, the dam of Peruvian champion Kung Fu Mambo.  To complete the gilded lineage featured here, third dam Spinning Round also won the Ballerina in her racing years.  This is a filly from a family whose members always do well at the sales.

Hip #681 - Tapit - Ava Knowsthecode (Cryptoclearance)
Dark bay or brown colt consigned by Valkyre Stud, Agent for Oakbrook Farm
This is one of the many foals out of the outstanding Cryptoclearance mare Ava Knowsthecode.  Stakes-placed herself, she has produced six winners out of eight to race, including Grade 2 winner Keyed Entry (Honour and Glory), Grade 3 winners Algorithms (Bernardini) and Successful Mission (Successful Appeal), and listed stakes winner Alex's Allure (Sky Classic).  There's also an outstanding update to this colt's page, as half-brother Justin Phillip (First Samurai) just won the Alfred G. Vanderbilt (G1) at Saratoga last month.  There is precocity on both sides of his pedigree - sire Tapit is known for producing two year-old champions; names like Hansen and Stardom Bound back that up well.

Hip #683 - Smart Strike - Awe That (Boundary)
Dark bay or brown filly consigned by Lane's End, Agent
Here's a filly by one of the most versatile stallions on the market.  Smart Strike can sire turf, dirt, sprint, route...the list of accomplishments by his offspring is certainly lengthy.  This yearling is a full sister to Grade 2 winner Bel Air Beauty, who went on to produce a stakes-placed runner herself in Valentino Beauty, who finished second in the TVG King Edward Stakes (G2) in Canada.  Second dam Bangled is an unraced half-sister to Grecian Flight, who took home the Acorn (G1) as a racehorse.  Besides Awe That, she is also the dam of Florida Oaks (G3) winner Anklet and French stakes winner Spangled, both of whom have gone on to produce stakes-placed winners.  This is a nice female family, success coming particularly for the females in the bunch.

Hip #689 - Elusive Quality - Baghdaria (Royal Academy)
Chestnut colt consigned by Denali Stud (Craig and Holly Bandoroff), Agent for Casa Farms I LLC
This is a colt from one of the most popular families in the stud book today.  First dam Baghdaria was a multiple graded stakes winner who has already produced a winner out of her first foal to race (by Giant's Causeway).  Second dam is Oatsee, a broodmare of the year and dam of horses like Preakness (G1) winner Shackleford, Alabama (G1) champion Lady Joanne, and Falls City (G2) winner Afleeting Lady.  The name Oatsee should inspire confidence in anyone knowledgeable looking at this colt's page.  Sire Elusive Quality is one of the best in the business, siring champions all around the world for many years now.

Hip #703 - Kitten's Joy - Becky Loves Silver (Silver Charm)
Bay filly consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, Agent CXL
This filly should be pretty popular in the sales ring as a daughter of Kitten's Joy, who is one of the hottest sires around as of late.  She is a half-sister to Fly Lexis Fly (Badge of Silver), a champion in Peru who came to the United States to finish second in the Super Derby (G2).  Second dam Bail Out Becky is a Del Mar Oaks (G1) winner whose daughter Unfold the Rose produced Stephanie's Kitten, a two-time Grade 1 winner and one of her sire's best.  Also a member of this family is Ransom the Kitten, another Kitten's Joy filly who is a stakes winner.  This is a nice turf female family, and with Kitten's Joy on top?  Looking very good.

Hip #707 - Medaglia d'Oro - Belva (Theatrical (IRE))
Bay filly consigned by Paramount Sales, Agent LXXVII
Though Medaglia d'Oro colts sell well, it's his fillies that really leave their mark on the racetrack - Marketing Mix, Plum Pretty, and, of course, Rachel Alexandra.  This particular daughter of his is a half-sister to champion English Channel (Smart Strike).  One of the best grass horses in the past decade, English Channel dominated the United States turf racing scene, closing out his career with an explosive open-lengths win in the 2007 Breeders' Cup Turf (G1).  Another half-sibling to this filly is Sedgefield, English Channel's full brother who finished second in the Lane's End Stakes (G2).  Dam Belva is a full sister to Grade 1 winner Pharma and Grade 2 winner Hap.  Second dam Committed was a champion sprinter in England and a champion miler in France.

Hip #713 - Giant's Causeway - Blissful (Mr. Prospector)
Chestnut colt consigned by Four Star Sales, Agent
Blissful was the first of three horses by Mr. Prospector and out of her dam, Angel Fever.  Her full brother, born a year later, went on to win the Kentucky Derby in 2000.  Yes, this colt is out of a full sibling to Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus.  Blissful has produced three winners out of five to race, including graded stakes-placed Where's That Tiger and One Great Cat, both by Storm Cat.  Seeing as this colt is by Giant's Causeway, he is bred along the same lines as his half-brothers.  Fusaichi Pegasus and Blissful's other full sibling, Bless, produced graded stakes winner Brave Tin Soldier, also by Storm Cat.  Second dam Angel Fever is a full sister to Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Pine Bluff and a half-sister to Arkansas Derby (G1) victor Demons Begone.

Hip #717 - Street Cry (IRE) - Blushing Ogygian (Ogygian)
Chestnut filly consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, Agent CLIII
This filly is a full sister to Street Boss, who lit up the track with a pair of speedy Grade 1 wins.  The track-record setter has since settled into retirement nicely, siring King's Bishop (G1) winner Capo Bastone in his first crop.  She is also a half-sister to Habiboo (Unbridled's Song), a graded stakes-placed winner.  Blushing Ogygian's half-sister Fruhlingserwachen produced Fruhlingssturm, a champion in the Netherlands.  Second dam Fruhlingshochzeit is a half-sister to Running Stag, who won the Massachusetts Handicap (G2).  A full sister to Street Boss is very intriguing, although many full siblings from today ended up as outs.  Hopefully that doesn't happen with this one - I want to see her sell!  (If people on Thursday can pronounce all three of the "Fruh" names correctly, major kudos to them.)

Hip #718 - Langfuhr - Bodhavista (Pass The Tab)
Bay colt consigned by Woodford Thoroughbreds, Agent
Directly following that filly is another full sibling; this time, it's a brother to Grade 2 winner Imperialism.  (Unrelated side note: my social studies teacher made us memorize a definition for the term "imperialism."  "The taking of the colonies for the good of the mother country."  I'll never forget it, and I'll always say it when I see the word Imperialism in any form.  Anyway...)  Imperialism was a competitive member of the crop that was headed by Smarty Jones, Birdstone and Rock Hard Ten.  Half-sister White Beauty (Robyn Dancer) is a listed stakes winner.  To make it even better, dam Bodhavista is a half-sibling to Grand Dame, the dam of Sweet Damsel, of Colonel John and Mr. Hot Stuff fame.  You know how I love Colonel John!  There is a very respectable female side here under Langfuhr, who is slightly underrated, as he has quietly sired such horses as Canadian Triple Crown winner Wando and Grade 1 winner Lawyer Ron.

Hip #740 - Kitten's Joy - Cardinalli (Capote)
Bay filly consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, Agent CXL
Kitten's Joy is one of, if not the best, turf sire in the country.  Stephanie's Kitten, Big Blue Kitten and Real Solution are just three of the many good racehorses by the stallion that can back up my first sentence.  This is a full sister to Banned, a Del Mar Derby (G2) winner and earner of a shade under $600,000.  Banned is Cardinalli's first winner out of two to race.  Second dam Footing, a graded stakes winner who was third in the Frizette (G1), is a full sister to Forty Love, dam of a leading three year-old sprinter this year, Forty Tales.  Also a member of this family is Pedicure, dam of Grade 2 winner Masseuse and granddam of Grade 1 winner Peristaltica (ARG).

Hip #743 - Candy Ride (ARG) - Carson Jen (Carson City)
Chestnut filly consigned by VanMeter Sales, Agent XI
Carson Jen, who was stakes-placed as a racehorse, has become a very successful broodmare.  Out of her six foals to race, all six are winners, three of those being stakes winners.  One is A.Z. Warrior (Bernardini), a Frizette Stakes (G1) winner.  There is also Grade 3 winner E Z Warrior (Exploit) and listed stakes winner J Z Warrior (Harlan's Holiday).  Carson Jen is by far the most successful of her siblings, although half-sister Time for a Crown produced stakes winner Banga Ridge.  This filly is by Candy Ride, whose offspring includes the speedy runners Misremembered and Capt. Candyman Can, among others.

Hip #745 - Fastnet Rock - Cash Run (Seeking the Gold)
Bay filly (IRE) consigned by Paramount Sales, Agent XC
This is one of the most intriguing entries in the entire first book in my opinion.  An Irish-bred filly, she is by Australian sire Fastnet Rock, who also happens to be the sire of the much talked-about racehorse down under, Atlantic Jewel.  This filly is out of Cash Run, a Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) winner who has already produced two international champions in Step in Time (Giant's Causeway) and Move Your Vision (Galileo), as well as Great War Eagle (Storm Cat), an Irish stakes winner.  Cash Run is also a half-sister to Forestry, a King's Bishop (G1) winner who went on to become a terrific sire.  Second dam Shared Interest won the Ruffian Handicap (G1) among other stakes on the track.  Yes, this certainly is the sales entry I'm looking forward to seeing on Thursday.  (That is, if she's not an "out" on Thursday...I hope I don't jinx this!)

Hip #757 - Distorted Humor - Charmed Gift (A.P. Indy)
Chestnut colt consigned by Lane's End, Agent
This is a colt out of a mare who has produced four winners out of four to race, including a full brother to this yearling, Endorsement.  Endorsement won the Sunland Park Derby (G3) and set a track record for a mile and a sixteenth at Gulfstream, as well.  Second dam Potridee (ARG) is pretty spectacular; a champion in Argentina, she came to the States to win the Vanity Invitational (G1), along with several races.  Her family is nice too - she is a full sister to Potrizaris, a mare of the year in Argentina who also happened to win their Derby, and also to Potrichal and Potrinner, both Grade 1 winners.  Charmed Gift is a half-sister to Puma Kitten, who produced Grade 3 winner Kitty in a Tizzy.

Hip #767 - Kitten's Joy - Chianti Red (Woodman)
Chestnut filly consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, Agent CXL
You could say that Chianti Red has been sort of a "wife" to Kitten's Joy, drawing parallels to such frequent pairings as Mahubah and Fair Play, among others.  It's worked for Chianti Red - all four of her Kitten's Joy offspring are winners, three of them stakes winners.  Artemus Kitten and Redwood Kitten are even graded-placed.  Third dam Video is a full sister to French Derby winner Caerleon, who went on to become a very nice sire.  Her son Scan set a track record in winning the Pegasus Stakes (G1) and daughter Moon Safari, stakes-placed as a racehorse, produced two Irish stakes winners of her own.  This is a nice turf family, and, hey, if the pairing worked four times already, why not this time as well?

Hip #772 - Midnight Lute - Citiview (Citidancer)
Gray or roan colt consigned by Gainesway, Agent XII
My enduring memory of Midnight Lute is his mud-spattered victory in the 2007 Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1), in which he launched an explosive kick mid-stretch to draw away impressively.  In retirement, he's not doing too shabby, siring horses like Govenor Charlie and Midnight Lucky, whom this colt just happens to be a full brother to.  Midnight Lucky, who earlier in the year had given a track record performance in the Sunland Park Oaks, drew away to win the Acorn (G1) at Belmont this spring.  Citiview also happens to be a full sister to Hookedonthefeelin, a Grade 1 winner and the dam of speedy California sprinters Pussycat Doll and Jimmy Creed, both of whom are Grade 1 winners themselves.  You want a horse to go out and light up a SoCal track?  Based on this pedigree page, this colt might be the one for you.

Hip #809 - Speightstown - Dance Swiftly (Danzig)
Chestnut colt consigned by Lane's End, Agent
Speightstown, who was a champion sprinter in his racing days, is turning into one heck of a sire, with Reynaldothewizard taking on the world and winning this year's Dubai Golden Shaheen (G1) and Dance to Bristol dominating the filly and mare sprint division in the absence of Groupie Doll the first half of this year.  This is a half-brother to two stakes winners and out of a mare who is a full sister to Dance Smartly, who was one of the best racemares in recent years.  Dance Smartly, a Canadian Triple Crown winner and Horse of the Year there, also came to the United States to win the Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1).  Her daughter Dancethruthedawn also became a champion in Canada.  Dance Swiftly is also a half-sister to Smart Strike, who has been leading sire twice and whose name is held high in the breeding world.  This female family is among the most popular in the stud book today; look for this colt to attract a lot of interest as it comes his time to sell.

Hip #828 - Hard Spun - Desert Stormer (Storm Cat)
Chestnut colt consigned by Hidden Brook, Agent
I just had a conversation about Hard Spun tonight on Twitter, discussing him versus War Front, Danzig's legacy, etc.  Anyway, the stallion, who was quite a nice racehorse, came out swinging with his first crop, giving us champion Questing and Grade 1 winner Zo Impressive, among others.  This colt is out of Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) winner Desert Stormer, who has produced seven winners out of nine to race.  Her best is Sahara Gold (Seeking the Gold), a Grade 2 winner who is the dam of Matriarch (G1) winner Better Lucky, Sahara Heat, a Grade 3 winner, and Forest City Girl, the dam of a Panamanian champion in Outskirt Lady.  Also a half-sibling to this colt is Ensenada (also Seeking the Gold), dam of two-time Grade 2 winner Casino Host.

Hip #835 - Street Cry (IRE) - Dixie Holiday (Dixieland Band)
Dark bay or brown colt consigned by Dromoland Farm Inc. (Gerry Dilger), Agent I
Juddmonte picked up a very nice Street Cry colt today for a good chunk of change.  The sire seems to stamp striking and imposing offspring, and Juddmonte's new acquisition was a perfect example of that.  This is a Street Cry colt out of a mare who has accomplished an impressive feat: producing eight winners out of eight starters.  100% winner-producer is something I love to see on a catalog page, and this mare couldn't have done it better.  Her best offspring is Holiday Runner (Meadowlake), a listed stakes winner who is the dam of Grade 1 winner Seventh Street (by Street Cry, so this yearling is bred pretty similarly) and Reynaldothewizard, who was mentioned earlier as the winner of the Dubai Golden Shaheen (G1).

Hip #846 - "Gold Shield," Medaglia d'Oro - Dream Supreme (Seeking the Gold)
Dark bay or brown colt consigned by Lane's End, Agent for Kinsman Farm
Here is a half-brother to Majestic Warrior (A.P. Indy), who as a racehorse won the Hopeful (G1) and as a sire has produced a lot of quality horses, the best of which is multiple Grade 1 winner Princess of Sylmar.  Dam Dream Supreme isn't too shabby herself, winning two Grade 1 races and producing six winners out of seven to race.  Her half-sister, Sweet City Gal, produced Peruvian champion Kung Fu Mambo.  Second dam Spinning Round is also a Grade 1 winner; in fact, both Dream Supreme and Spinning Round won the Ballerina (G1) at Saratoga.  This is a nice female family which has had a lot of success up at the Spa, apparently.  Oh, and have I mentioned that Medaglia d'Oro is one heck of a stallion?  He is quite successful, indeed.

Hip #855 - Tiznow - Easter Bunnette (Carson City)
Dark bay or brown filly consigned by Mill Ridge Sales, Agent
Pinch me, I must be dreaming - are we really on the very last horse to preview in this Keeneland September series?  We could not be ending on a better note.  Sire Tiznow is nothing short of spectacular; the two-time Breeders' Cup Classic winner has given us horses like Well Armed, Folklore and Colonel John and will continue to give us great horses for many years to come, if all is right with the world.  This filly is a half-sister to none other than Horse of the Year Havre de Grace, winner of such races as the Woodward (G1) against the boys and a pair of Grade 1 races against the girls as well.  This is the family of another good racemare, as well; Easter Bunnette is a half-sister to the dam of Riskaverse, a Flower Bowl (G1) winner.  This filly is near the end of the day and should give Thursday's late afternoon a welcome intensity.

Well, that is all for this series of Pedigree Highlights!  The next edition will most likely be previewing Keeneland's November Sale, so watch out for that in a couple of months.  Thank you to all those who took the time to read these posts, and enjoy the rest of your Keeneland experience!
